Roasting Coffee at Home Saves Money!
Many people consider the various articles of coffee equipment to be essential kitchen items. A large portion of a typical kitchen budget is actually spent on coffee. One very good way to save money and at the same time maximize enjoyment is to roast coffee at home. Green (unroasted) coffee beans are readily available and considerably cheaper than roasted coffee beans. And green coffee beans have a shelf life of almost two years so you can buy in bulk and save even more money. Also, consider the superior taste of fresh-roasted coffee. Rather than spend money at Starbucks, roast coffee at home! Enjoy the best coffee ever and save money at the same time!
The key to saving money on coffee has been the recent development of the modern home coffee roaster. Using a coffee roaster is very easy – it is often compared to making popcorn. Modern coffee roasters are much less expensive than the models available in the past and can be grouped into two types - regular coffee roasters and smokeless coffee roasters. Each type has its advantages which are discussed below in the home coffee roaster review. The Fresh Roast SR500 is a good way to start out, assuming that one has an effective kitchen range hood for ventilation. If not, the best smokeless coffee roaster is the Behmor Home Coffee Roaster. Depending on how much coffee your household consumes, a coffee roaster will pay for itself in one to two years. One way to get started is to read Home Coffee Roasting: Romance and Revival by Kenneth Davids, one of the leading experts on all matters relating to coffee. Another approach is to buy a Coffee Roaster Starter Kit which includes a French Press coffee maker, a selection of green coffee beans, and of course”Romance and Revival.”
Coffee Grinders
Even if you do not roast coffee at home, you really need a coffee grinder. Studies have shown that coffee, once ground, starts to rapidly lose its flavor and after about two hours only half of the original flavor remains. And why spend money on ground coffee knowing that half of the flavor has already disappeared? No wonder store-bought coffee does not taste as good as coffee from a local coffee shop!
For drip coffee makers, a Krups 20342 Electric Coffee and Spice grinder with stainless steel blades, Black will do just fine and the Krups is a very cheap and durable coffee grinder. Of all the blade-type coffee grinders, the Krups has for many years been one of the most popular. Naturally, it is rated very highly by reviewers.
For a French press or an espresso coffee maker, a burr grinder is required. A blade coffee grinder produces coffee particles of varying sizes and although this is not a problem for a drip coffee maker, it is not satisfactory for other coffee makers. The Bodum Bistro Electric Burr Coffee Grinder, one of the most highly-rated and least expensive burr grinders is recommended if you have a French Press.

French Press Coffee Makers
Ideally, the best coffee is roasted at home and then freshly ground. And to truly maximize the value (and flavor), you need a French press coffee maker. The Frieling Stainless Steel French Press is a beautiful coffee maker that is almost indestructible – a good investment for the long-term. A French press is not difficult to use and is less expensive than an espresso maker.

Home Coffee Roaster Review
Drink the freshest coffee ever! Home coffee roasting is not difficult and you will save money in a couple of ways: First, green (unroasted) coffee beans are less expensive than roasted coffee beans, especially when you buy in bulk. Second, if you really love great coffee, you will no longer be tempted to buy expensive coffee at a coffee shop. After all, how can any coffee be fresher or better tasting than coffee that you roasted in your own home?
Unfortunately, roasting coffee at home has not always been an easy or convenient process. Coffee roasters were fairly large and expensive machines owned only by die-hard coffee drinkers. However, nowadays modern home coffee roasters are about the size of a toaster oven or food processor. Two general types are available – regular or smokeless – and each type has its advantages. Most importantly, either type will pay for itself in 1-2 years simply through savings on coffee.
Smokeless coffee roasters obviously produce little or no smoke. Two models are currently available: the Nesco Professionaland the Behmor 1600. The Nesco has much less roasting capacity than the Behmor – about 5.5 ounces compared to a pound for the Behmor. Although the Nesco is considerably less expensive, we recommend the Behmor because of its higher capacity and because it is a drum roaster. Drum roasters are more durable than air roasters such as the Nesco. Because of its poor service record, we do not recommend the Nesco.
Home coffee roasters are also available that are not smokeless. Two brands are popular – the Hearthware i-Roast 2 and the Fresh Roast SR500. The Fresh Roast SR500 is less expensive than the i-Roast 2. There is also a cheaper version of the Fresh Roast, the SR300. The SR500 has a much better repair record than the SR300 and therefore we recommend the Fresh Roast SR500. Compared to the smokeless Behmor 1600, the Fresh Roaster 500 is much less expensive. It is also better if you want dark roasted coffee (French or Vienna, for example). The Fresh Roast will complete a roasting cycle in about half the time of the Behmor which can take 20-30 minutes to complete a roast. Smoke can be a problem, especially with dark roasts. One solution is to place the roaster under a kitchen range hood. Alternatively, the roaster can be moved outside to a garage or workshop. Be aware, however, that coffee roasting is sensitive to ambient temperature. In other words, the time required to roast a batch of beans will change if the outside temperature is different.
A home coffee roaster will allow you to enjoy great coffee and save money at the same time. Moreover, the roasting process itself is enjoyable. You will enjoy the aroma produced during the coffee roasting process. It is like baking bread at home. You will be aware of the sound of the coffee as it roasts. The physical and chemical nature of the coffee bean changes during the roasting process and these changes are accompanied by sounds known as “cracks.” These sounds are somewhat like popcorn when it is popping. At the first crack, you will have a light roast to be shortly followed by medium roasts, popularly known as breakfast, City, American, and regular roasts. A Full City roast is obtained at the sound of the “second crack” with dark roasts (Vienna, French, and Italian) following. The first time that a particular lot of coffee is roasted you will need to pay attention to cracks. Afterwards, you will be able to set the timer and obtain the desired level of roasting with little effort. Both the Behmor 1600 and the Fresh Roast SR500 are designed to make home coffee roasting an enjoyable experience that saves money and delivers fantastic coffee. Enjoy life!
